How Often Should You Actually Post on Social Media?

Everyone says something different. So I tested it myself for 90 days. Here's what I learned.

The Experiment

**Duration:** 90 days (3 months)

**Platforms:** Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook

**Variables tested:** Posting frequency (1x to 5x per day)

**Content:** Same type across all tests (educational/value-based)

**Goal:** Find the optimal posting frequency for each platform.

The Results (By Platform)

Twitter: The Sweet Spot is 3-5 Posts Per Week

What I tested:

  • Week 1-2: 1x per day
  • Week 3-4: 2x per day
  • Week 5-6: 3x per day
  • Week 7-8: 5x per week
  • Week 9-12: 3x per week
  • The data:

    | Frequency | Avg Engagement | Avg Reach | Follower Growth |

    |-----------|----------------|-----------|-----------------|

    | 1x/day | 34 | 890 | +12/week |

    | 2x/day | 28 | 1,240 | +15/week |

    | 3x/day | 19 | 1,100 | +8/week |

    | 5x/week | 42 | 1,450 | +22/week |

    | 3x/week | 38 | 1,350 | +18/week |

Winner: 5x per week (once per weekday)

    Why:

  • Consistent presence without overwhelming followers
  • Each post gets enough "air time"
  • Weekends are low engagement anyway
  • Don't:

  • Post more than 1x per day (unless you're a news account)
  • Post every single day (burnout + diminishing returns)
  • Post on weekends expecting the same reach
  • LinkedIn: 3-4x Per Week is Optimal

    What I tested:

  • Week 1-3: Daily posting (7x/week)
  • Week 4-6: 5x per week
  • Week 7-9: 3x per week
  • Week 10-12: 2x per week
  • The data:

    | Frequency | Avg Engagement | Avg Impressions | Connection Requests |

    |-----------|----------------|-----------------|---------------------|

    | 7x/week | 45 | 2,100 | +8/week |

    | 5x/week | 67 | 3,200 | +14/week |

    | 3x/week | 89 | 4,100 | +19/week |

    | 2x/week | 52 | 2,800 | +11/week |

Winner: 3x per week (Mon, Wed, Fri)

    Why:

  • LinkedIn's algorithm favors quality over quantity
  • Gives each post 48+ hours to circulate
  • Followers don't feel spammed
  • You have time to make each post good
  • **Best times:** Morning (7-9 AM) or lunch (12-2 PM)

    Don't:

  • Post daily (algorithm penalizes frequency)
  • Post on weekends (engagement drops 60%)
  • Rush posts just to hit a schedule
  • Instagram: 4-5x Per Week (Feed + Stories)

    What I tested:

  • Feed posts only (various frequencies)
  • Stories only (daily)
  • Combination of both
  • The data:

    | Frequency | Avg Engagement Rate | Reach | Follower Growth |

    |-----------|---------------------|-------|-----------------|

    | Feed: Daily | 3.2% | 1,800 | +12/week |

    | Feed: 5x/week | 3.9% | 2,200 | +18/week |

    | Feed: 3x/week | 4.1% | 2,400 | +15/week |

    | Feed: 3x + Stories Daily | 5.7% | 3,600 | +28/week |

    Winner: 3-4 feed posts/week + Daily Stories

    Why:

  • Feed posts are high-effort, need quality
  • Stories keep you visible daily without burnout
  • Algorithm rewards consistent Stories
  • Followers engage more with mix
  • Best practice:

  • Feed: Mon, Wed, Fri
  • Stories: Daily (takes 2 min)
  • Reels: 2x per week (if you can)
  • Don't:

  • Post feed content daily (quality suffers)
  • Ignore Stories (easy visibility)
  • Repost the same content to Stories
  • Facebook: 3-4x Per Week (Groups Perform Better)

    What I tested:

  • Page posts
  • Group posts
  • Combination
  • The data:

    | Frequency | Avg Reach | Engagement | Page Likes |

    |-----------|-----------|------------|------------|

    | Daily (Page) | 340 | 18 | +2/week |

    | 3x/week (Page) | 890 | 42 | +7/week |

    | Daily (Group) | 1,200 | 67 | +15/week |

    | 3x/week (Group) | 1,450 | 89 | +23/week |

Winner: 3x per week in Groups

    Why:

  • Facebook Pages have terrible organic reach
  • Groups still get decent visibility
  • Less frequency = more attention per post
  • **Reality check:** Facebook engagement is low regardless. Prioritize other platforms.

The Overall Strategy (My Current Approach)

After 90 days of testing, here's what I do:

    Monday:

  • LinkedIn post
  • Instagram feed post
  • Twitter thread
  • Wednesday:

  • LinkedIn post
  • Twitter 2-3 single posts
  • Friday:

  • LinkedIn post
  • Instagram feed post
  • Twitter 2-3 single posts
  • Facebook Group post
  • Daily:

  • Instagram Stories (2 min)
  • Engage on all platforms (15 min)
  • **Total time:** ~45 min/day

What I Learned About Posting Frequency

    1. **More ≠ Better**

Every platform showed diminishing returns after a certain point.

    The plateau:

  • Twitter: After 5-6 posts/week
  • LinkedIn: After 3-4 posts/week
  • Instagram Feed: After 4-5 posts/week
  • 2. **Consistency > Frequency**

Posting 3x per week consistently beats posting daily for 2 weeks then disappearing.

Your audience learns when to expect your content.

    3. **Platform Algorithms Are Different**

  • LinkedIn: Rewards less frequency
  • Twitter: Tolerates more frequency
  • Instagram: Stories are free real estate
  • Don't use the same strategy everywhere.

    4. **Quality Matters More Than You Think**

When I dropped from 5x to 3x per week on LinkedIn, I had MORE time to make each post better.

**Result:** 2x the engagement despite fewer posts.

    5. **Engagement > Posting**

    Time breakdown that worked best:

  • 30% creating content
  • 40% engaging with others
  • 30% responding to comments
  • Most people do 80% creating, 20% everything else.

    The Realistic Recommendation

    If you're starting out:

  • Pick 1-2 platforms max
  • Post 3x per week
  • Engage 15 min per day
  • Ignore the rest
  • If you have a small team:

  • Cover 3-4 platforms
  • Hire for content creation
  • You handle strategy + engagement
  • If you're solo:

  • Twitter: 5x per week
  • LinkedIn: 3x per week
  • Instagram: 3x feed + daily stories
  • Facebook: Skip it (or post in Groups only)
  • Tools to Make This Easier

    Scheduling:

  • Buffer ($35/month) - simple and works
  • Content Creation:

  • PostForgeHub (obviously) - for repurposing
  • Analytics:

  • Native platform analytics (free and good enough)
  • Don't:

  • Overthink it
  • Buy expensive tools you don't need
  • Stress about posting every single day
  • The Bottom Line

    Optimal posting frequency:

  • Twitter: 5x per week
  • LinkedIn: 3x per week
  • Instagram: 3-4x feed + daily stories
  • Facebook: 3x per week (Groups only)
  • **But honestly?** Start with what you can sustain.

Better to post 2x per week consistently than 5x per week for 2 weeks then burn out.
